Hanauma Bay Parking

Parking is inexpensive, but spaces are limited and separate from admission. Plan the lot before you plan the beach.

Temporary notice · August 2026 The preserve and parking area are closed through August 18, 2026.

The current closure supports sewer-system improvements. Check the official Honolulu reservation system before driving, especially near the expected reopening date.

Parking Basics

The fee is small. The limited number of spaces is the real issue. An admission reservation does not reserve a parking stall.

Non-resident vehicle$3

Paid separately from admission when entering the preserve.

Hawai’i resident vehicle$1

Use the resident rate only with valid Hawai’i identification.

Parking reservationNone

Parking remains first come, first served even with a valid entry time.

Admission does not guarantee parking

Your ticket controls entry to the preserve. It does not hold a stall, protect you from a full lot, or add extra beach time if parking delays you.

At the Gate

How It Works

1

Turn In

Follow Kalaniana’ole Highway to Hanauma Bay Road and obey gate signs.

2

Check Space

Attendants control vehicle entry when spaces are limited or the lot is full.

3

Pay Parking

Parking is separate from online admission. Bring small cash bills.

4

Check In

After parking, continue to the visitor entrance for admission and orientation.

Parking and admission are two separate transactions.

Complete your reservation first, then bring a separate parking plan and payment method.

Timing

When to Arrive

Give yourself more time than the drive estimate suggests. Entrance-road traffic, parking control, check-in, and the required education process all happen before you reach the beach.

Late Morning

Parking pressure may increase, while delays start to cut into the value of your reserved entry time.

Afternoon

A full lot or slow arrival is harder to recover from because last entry and beach clearing are fixed.

Best driving strategy

Choose a morning entry when possible, arrive before the selected time, and avoid placing another timed activity immediately after Hanauma Bay.

Backup Plan

If the Lot Is Full

Follow the attendants’ directions. Do not stop on the entrance road, block traffic, or assume that legal overflow parking will be available nearby.

Wait Only When Directed

Parking staff may control when vehicles can enter. Do not create your own waiting area on the roadway.

Do Not Park Illegally

The surrounding highway and residential areas are not a dependable overflow-parking system.

Use Another Day

Leaving Hanauma Bay for your final day on O’ahu removes your best backup option.

Skip the Lot

A permitted transportation option can remove the parking problem, but tour inclusions must be checked carefully.

Useful Rule

15-Minute Refund

Honolulu’s fee code says the parking fee must be refunded for vehicles that leave the preserve within 15 minutes of entry.

Use it as a safeguard, not a plan

The short refund window can help if you enter and immediately need to leave. It does not solve a late arrival, a missed reservation time, or a poor transportation plan.

No Car

Drop-Offs

Taxi and ride-hail drop-offs may sound easier than parking, but state visitor guidance discourages them because of traffic and safety considerations near the preserve.

Do not assume a driver can wait, enter the lot freely, or collect you at the same place later. Confirm current pickup rules and return transportation before leaving your hotel.

Plan the return trip

Mobile coverage, driver availability, surge pricing, and pickup restrictions can make the return less predictable than the arrival.

Operators

Commercial Vehicles

Licensed motor carriers use a separate fee schedule based on passenger capacity. These fees are not standard visitor parking.

Vehicle CapacityCity FeeVisitor Note
1 to 7 passengers$10Applies to qualifying licensed motor carriers.
8 to 25 passengers$20Operator access and passenger arrangements remain separate.
26 or more passengers$40Large commercial vehicles follow city carrier rules.

When booking a tour or shuttle, verify whether transportation, admission, equipment, and guided snorkeling are included. They are not automatically bundled.

Simpler Arrival

Skip the Lot

A transportation-included option can make sense for visitors staying in Waikiki who do not want to manage a rental car, the parking booth, and a potentially full lot.

Compare the full package rather than the headline price. Check the pickup area, entry arrangement, equipment, guide support, return time, and cancellation terms.
